Established in 1983, MG University (MGU) has awarded about 1500 doctoral degrees in various disciplines during the past 25 years. In its Silver Jubilee Year 2008 University initiated the development of an Online Open Access PhD Theses Digital Library.

Launching MGU Online Theses Digital Library website ( on 9th November 2008 HE Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam, the former President of India stated that the project is an important step towards the democratization of knowledge and that he was sure the model of digital archives created by MG University will be emulated by other Indian universities leading to transparency in the education system.

MG University decided to make its research results open in the International Open Access Week 2009. MGU Online Theses website provides Open Access to its digital collection of dissertations, making public funded research transparent and accessible for further research. It is the only official full text open access archives of PhD dissertations hosted in the web by any Indian University. It hosts all the doctoral dissertations of the university accepted for awarding PhD from 1983 to the present. The archive has been selected as one of the best web resources for education and research by INTUTE, a European consortium of universities funded by Government of UK’s Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) and the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC). It is the first of such recognition coming to an Indian University. By signing of MOU with INFLIBNT for maintaining standards and contributing content to its online repository, MGU has become the first signatory among Indian universities to contribute data to INFLIBNET-UGC adhering to UGC Regulation on e-theses.
